Poetry and Songs

We are now starting to look at how poetry works in song lyrics. Today some children learned about a protest song. Pureroa was one of the last remaining native forests in New Zealand, when it was felled in the 1970s. Hirini Melbourne wrote a song about it. You can find it in the link below.

Here are some more links with information about Pureora:

What other protest songs do you know? What mood is your protest song? Is it sad? Angry? Uplifting? Think about what words make the poem have a ‘mood’ or feeling.

What mood is this song?

Watch “Song of Protest” on New Zealand On Screen. This documentary was made in 1986.

At athletics day,  when my name got called out, i rushed up to the starting line as my arms flew back and forth, when the gun went bang i shot of like a bullet tawords the finish line, my friends were catching up but i was in luck, i came first place, then i went up to the table, where the techer was writing the places down, i told her my name, then i walked down the side, while watching the other races, i saw my friend zoom past everyone, i kept going till i reached my ropu and sat down.Go kakariki!!!!!!
